CAP Winter SAREX
Toss your snowshoes in the back and come join us for a Winter ES SAREX!
We will be staying in a cabin in Pioneer for two nights. We will learn and practice essential springtime Ground Team Member skills like:
- Winter-Spring Land Navigation
- Snow/Slush shelter building and survival techniques
- Cold weather equipment and clothing
- Using your GPS in a snow-laden pine forest
- DFing tips and tricks
- Stoves and campfires
Who: Anyone with a GES card may participate. Cadet participation is highly-encouraged.
When: Friday February 1st we will depart for the cabin in Pioneer from the following location:
1930 hours at the IGA Payless, 26560 CA-88, Pioneer, CA 95666 (we’ll carpool to the cabin from there)
We will depart Sunday February 3rd around 1300 hours
RSVP: To hold your space, send an email to Lt Col Brett Dolnick brett.dolnick@cawg.cap.govbefore January 20th. Include your name, CAPID, SQ #, ES rating you’re working on, and cell number. You may hand-carry your signed F31 form to the event or scan it and email it ahead of time. The same goes for the Forms 160, 161, and 163.
The cost: will be $15 for cadets $25 for seniors.
What to bring: A recommended equipment list will be distributed to the RSVP’ers.
You will need SNOWSHOES – you can rent them from REI or other sporting goods store for the weekend for around $10-15. Plan ahead!
Dress for working in the snow, not too heavy, this is not an expedition to Antarctica and you need to be able to move freely in the clothes. Wear wicking layers for when you sweat. Don’t forget gloves.
You will carry your 24 pack. A winterized Camelback style water pack is highly recommended. Bring your sleeping bag and pillow – we will sleep on the floor in the cabin at night, so a regular bag and pad will be sufficient. We will cook as a group and go over winter stove operations, but bring your own snacks, granola, gorp, and GU.
Uniform: The cotton BDU/ABU uniform is not appropriate for snow/slush operations. The nylon BDU or ABUs are better. In the cabin you may wear fleece pants, and a t-shirt. When we go out into the snow, wear synthetic nylon pants, and a fast-drying shirt. No jeans. No cotton sweatshirts. No BDU overcoats. Bring a windbreaker or Gortex shell jacket. Don’t forget a wool hat.
DO NOT WEAR COMBAT JUMP BOOTS. Wear appropriate light-weight hiking Sorels or waterproof Gortex boots suitable for walking in show shoes for 1 hour or more.
